Woodcote CX Sportive - Sunday 27 January Rob & Dan at the Woodcote CX SportiveDan and Rob rode the 80k route of the Woodcote CX Sportive on Sunday. Rob reports: This was a sportive with a difference, as parts of the course were along a mixture of bridleways, fire roads and single track, limiting the choice of bike to either MTB or cyclocrosser (both Dan and I plumped for the latter). The rapid thawing of all the snow from last week made for a very wet and muddy course – just what we had hoped for! After sticking together for the first half, we decided it was best to tackle at our own paces, as any gains I made on the ascents quickly evapourated on every technical descent where Dan would sail past me! Dan and I missed out on our photo-finish because he had been charitable enough to assist a puncture-victim a few ks from the end (I would of course have stopped as well if I had seen the guy. Honest.)

Dan Muddy Face WaltonI'd recommend this ride and will definitely think about doing it again next year (if only to make the gold standard that we just missed out on). It's very well organised, as long as you have GPS and download the course files that are sent in the race pack. Without these, I reckon we'd still be out there now – the signs around the course were terrible!

Here's the results:

Rob Parry – 3h43m silver
Dan Walton - 3h49m silver

Change to Club Champs sprint race

The Committee have been advised that entry numbers at Hillingdon will be limited to 110 so to avoid any risk of CPT members missing out, we have decided on an alternative for the Club Spinrt Championship, which is….

The Thorpe Sprint. This isn't a London League race, but It's on the same day, Sunday 9 June, and is a classic 750m/20k/5k open water format. Grant has secured a dedicated CPT wave for us, so we can have a proper head to head!

Details of all this year's championship races can be found on the Club Champs page.

Don't forget to let me know when you've entered this, and any other, race so your name can be added to the race matrix.

London League 2013

The London League race series for 2013 has been announced. Check out the link above and save under your Favourites, as race results/reports and league rankings are updated to this site throughout the year:

The first four races are open for entries, so please consider giving the classic Thames Turbo Sprint on 1 April a go.

Everyone who races is in with a chance of making it on the CPT London League Team (first 3 seniors + first female + first vet).

Don't forget to get your entry added to the race matrix as all London League races count towards the Club League too.

Cashback deal!

The Club needs you to get involved in the London League, so if you enter and race in at least three of the events, the Club will reimburse you up to 50% of the entry fee, to be claimed and repaid at the end of the year.

That's all for now. Happy entering, and no slacking on the training as you're doing it for CPT this year!!

Cold water swimmingMark swims regularly at Tooting Bec LIdo with a gruop of swimmers right through the winter. He swims there every Saturday morning. On Saturday 19 January the temperature was one degree when the photos were taken. Mark did eight lengths – then after a sauna a width without the wetsuit. Most of Mark's group don't think he's a true cold water swimmer as he normally wears a wetsuit, whereas most of the others don’t!

On Saturday 26 January, the Lido is hosting the National Cold Water Swimming Championships. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) it's too late to enter as it is already fully booked up with about 800 people from all around the UK taking part, but if anyone from the Club wants to watch, or take part in untimed swims in the Dipping Lane between races, details are on the SLSC website.

Calling all members - Kingfisher AquathlonRob has some insider intel on Kingfisher Aquathlon registration. So far 15 CPT members have entered, whereas 25 Thames Turbo are already in. This tells me four things:

1. People aren't letting the webmasters know that they have entered races (as we only have 5 names down on the race matrix);

2. Kingfisher is filling up early;

3. Thames Turbo are a key rival who are getting more involved in the London League than they did last year; and….

3. At this rate they will be STEALING our mob match trophy away from us at the end of the year!!

Come on guys, today is the day that you all need to enter this race! It's cheap, loads of fun, and is the Club champs as well as being a London League event. We need each and every one of you who can possibly make it to join the red white and black lycra army, and show the rest of these jokers which Club rules over London town. Whether you choose to attack this as a training/recovery session or an A+++ focus event, your attendance counts.

I'll be coming back with more details on the London League, as soon as all the races for 2013 are confirmed. Until then, happy entering

Sunday ride - 13 JanuaryThere were 10 of us out on a chilly, but ice-free morning.

Noel and Rob P both wanted to keep their ride fairly short so did the Pilgrim’s Way route.

The rest of us, Jon H, Dan, Peter, Jim, Emma, Emily, Sally and myself, went to Box Hill. We set off in one group at quite a pace for Sally and I. We kept together until just after Coulsdon when Sally and I dropped back and eased the pace.

When we got to Headley, Sally took the top road to the cafe and I did the Zig Zag on my own. Sally sent me a text to say she was in the cafe thawing out so I met her there, good call!.

Jim popped in to say he, Emma and Emily weren’t stopping and we didn’t see Jon’s group again!

Sally and I cycled back a bit quicker, as it's pretty much downhill back to Coulsdon, but my feet were absolutely freezing by the time I got home, it was only because I was clipped in that I could turn the pedals!.

Update: I've just seen a Tweet from Rob saying that Noel's ride came to an abrupt end (of course at the furthest part of the route from home)...

Jan 12

Super Saturday - 12 JanuaryA great turnout on a chilly, but luckily dry, Saturday morning, with 25 keen adults and three juniors for a turbo/run session.

Jon split everyone into three groups, Scott led the faster athletes, Jon took another group and some of us went with Brian who was coaching the session as part of his British Triathlon Level 2 coaching qualification.

The focus was on technique and endurance and we were certainly put through our paces, before we cooled down and Scott led us through some stretches.

Photos of the pain can be seen on our Flick site.

There are four more extended Saturday sessions planned: 26 January, 9 February, 23 February, 23 March.

New Year Treasure Hunt - Saturday 2 February Selwyn, our new social coordinator, is organising a Club treasure hunt at 14:00 on Saturday 2 February in Dulwich Park. He says that's all you need to know for now - instead of your usual weeken run,  why not come and do this instead?

It will be a good chance to meet and greet fellow Club members (adult and junior), hunt for treasure, have some fun (either on your own or as a team), with a 5k or 10k option and post-hunt celebratory drink in a local watering hole.

More details to follow on the e-group so keep your eyes open but save the date!

Super Saturday training session - 12 January

The next Super Saturday session will be a run and turbo session designed to blow the cobwebs away! The focus will continue to be on technique and endurance.

Meet at 09:20 by the gates to the CPNSC Track (besides CPSIC). Session ends: 12:00.

Session fee: £10 (no charge for annual training members)

The coaches have found it very helpful to their planning to know who is attending - Jon has asked me to encourage everybody who is aiming to be there to let me know by end of play on Thursday.

Please confirm you are attending by 00:00 on Thursday evening, 10 January by emailing: Sally.

If you need to borrow a Club Turbo please let Jon know.

Sunday 6 January - ride report and resultsDespite the dreadful foggy weather this morning there was a reasonable turnout for the Sunday ride.

Emma, Cath, Peter and myself did the Pilgrim's Way route. It was a bit scary on the downhills as we couldn't see very far ahead into the fog. Unfortunately I have overindulged over Christmas so was the slowest up some of the hills. Thanks for waiting guys!

Jon H led a faster group round the Wrotham route, including Greg, Suse, Richard, Peter, Grant, Marcel and Mark (who has posted the ride to Strava).

Phil F was spotted doing his own thing and Brian S missed us by about five minutes at Elmers End as we left promptly at 09:00 for a change.

Meanwhile a number of members were braving Epsom Downs for the Tadworth 10. A few were running for the first time and three members got PBs (they've obviously taken their training more seriously than me over the holiday period!). I've updated the PBs page.

Cathy has finally banished her Tadworth demons, returning for the first time since 2004. She says she vaguely enjoyed it but agrees with Brigit that the hills seemed to have grown on the second lap! Brigit says it was a great way to dust off the holiday cobwebs,

Lisa reports that CPT did really well in the team results. Lauren, Lisa and Cathy came a very impressive 3rd place out of 31 ladies teams, and in the men's team competition Mark, John and Kevin came 11th and Haydn, Dave and Gary came 39th out of 49.

New Year numbersThe New Year has got off to a good start with numbers up at Thursday's swim at Forest Hill and Friday's swim at Trinity. There was also a very good turnout for the Novice ride on Saturday morning, including a few new faces. Fintan videoed parts of the ride with his helmetcam, unfortunately because of the drizzly, grey conditions the quality isn't brilliant.Despite a small incident with Christmas present cleats, everyone had a great ride. Then it was a quick sprint up Anerley Hill (or in some cases a drive) for refreshments at Cadence!

Novice ride - 5 January

Fintan's videos can be viewed on his Flickr site.

Fintan's cycling trip to Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam

Over Xmas I took a holiday, cycling from Bangkok to Saigon, via Ankor Wat, on a hired Specialized Hardrock. Or to be more accurate cycled about half that distance, travelling the rest of the way by bus. I travelled with Exodus holidays in an international group of 18. My garmin says I cycled 280 miles in 9 days on the bike at an average of about 13mph. I probably sat out a further 50 or so possible cycling miles on the support bus. I had chosen to do this trip in December as it is the coolest driest month with daily highs of about 33. Unfortunately there was a heatwave and daily highs were about 40 with a riding temperature of 44 reported one day.

In general we avoided the main highways and used back roads, the journey was one of cycling contrasts. The Thai roads were very wide, very well surfaced and maintained and almost empty. The Cambodian roads were narrow, less well maintained and quite busy; apart from the Ankor Wat area where they were like the Thai roads. The Vietnamese roads were narrow less well maintained and quite busy. During the trip there were two crashes; a serious one on the second day caused by hitting a pothole at 25mph, extensive scrapes and two cracked ribs but he kept cycling; and a minor one caused by braking on lose gravel.

Fintan at Ankor Wat and yes that is a FOHH top

At Ankor Wat and yes that is a FOHH top.

My main reason for choosing this trip was to visit Ankor Wat. This is a Hindu and Buddhist temple complex dating from the 12th century. You can read the descriptions and look at the photographs, but you have to visit and be overwhelmed by it to really appreciate it. It should be on your personal list of places to visit. I had booked this trip in the summer when the physio falsely predicted that my groin had healed. I only got an all-clear to start serious training for this trip a few weeks before I went so I was not as strong as I would have liked but I think it demonstrates that my groin is finally healing. If you want more details just ask me after a training session, but be warned I might be difficult to stop if you do.

Photos are available on my Flickr site and helmet cam video at (Ankor Wat on Day 5, 21st December).
