Evans Gatwick Sportive - Sunday 27 November

Haydn - Evans Gatwick SportiveHaydn reports "I did the Evans Gatwick Sportive on Sunday with Lauren and Roy (Roy did the long route, we did the more civilised medium 80k route). It looked a bad decision when we arrived at Gatwick as it was very windy, cold, and it started to rain. Having made our way there we decided we really should do it so off we set in multiple layers. Within half an hour the cloud started to clear, it warmed up and eventually the sun came out making it a great day for a ride, although it did stay very windy. Unusual for Evans the route was largely on main roads but I guess they probably had one eye on the weather. Nevertheless it was a nice scenic ride which we finished in just over three hours. Wimbledon Common parkrun

Sheila reports:

Our 1st parkrun
On Saturday Elle, Harry and I raced our first ever parkrun at Wimbledon Common.  It was also the first time that all of us had run 5K, they usually run less and I usually run more!  Jon sent us off with a plan, I was to pace Harry round the first couple of kilometres and then drop back to encourage Elle round the last couple of kilometres.  Well best laid plans and all that, the fella took us by surprise on the start line with a very quiet but sudden 'Go' and over 200 of us were off.  Harry flew away but I didhave Elle in my sights for the first 2k, then she eeked ahead and basically they both left me for dust!  Pace them!!!  Both were fastest U14 for Keith at Ashton Court parkruntheir gender (that week) with very impressive times and I came in over a minute after Elle with both of them cheering me on, finishing 3rd female in my age category.

Keith did an 'away' parkrun at Ashton Court in Bristol.  Keith says "It's a tuffy. Makes CP parkrun seem flat!".

South East Road Race League

HaydnHaydn went along to the new Cyclopark at Gravesend on Sunday for the SERRL (South East Road Race League) Winter series round 3 race. I was regretting this by the end of the first 2.6km lap after been dropped by the cat 3 and 4 group on the first bend having anticipated a steady start and then watched them dissapear into the distance.

Two laps hammering it as fast as I could trying to catch them was wasted although I did catch another victim and we then took short turns through the rest of the race which was 90 minutes long.

We subsequently got lapped twice and managed to hold on each time for just a couple of laps before the ineviatble happend and we found ourselves out the back again.

Still 56km in 90 minutes isn't bad on what is an undulating twisty course - although it is a lovely smooth surface.

If anyone is interested they race every two weeks and you have to affiliate to the league which you can do on line or on the day.

It really shows how good (or bad) your cycling is and is a great way to see what road racing is about on a closed circuit where you only have to worry about the other riders.

For less adventurous souls the open day on the 3rd would be a good way to test the circuit out. Nice coffee and cake franchise as well as good spectator facilities.

Where did I come? Not last. Ok 35th out of 36 cat 3/4 racers. I can't beleive they're so fast. I'll be giving it another go soon and trying to stay up with the front of the group, and if not it's another 90 minute time trial.

Results - 12 - 13 November

On Saturday, two members braved the mist and damp on Box Hill for the Autumn Ballbuster on Saturday, while Dave and Claire battled it out at the Mens Health Survival of the Fittest, where there wasn't too much running, just lots of obstacles including mud baths and freezing chest high water.

On Sunday Clare (running for Dulwich Runners) came third overall and first female at the Beckenham 10k Trail Run, where Ruki got a PB.

Katie had a very busy weekend, completing the Evans Ride It Biggin Hill Off Road Sportive on Saturday 12 and the Biggin Hill Sportive on Sunday 13 November. The Club ride went along some of the route and managed to get their photographs taken by SportivePhoto.

Late results - 30-31 October

Cathy completed her first (and last she says!) marathon in Dublin on Monday.

Dublin Marathon

Cathy featured on the front page of the Dublin Marathon supplement from the Irish Independent. She's in the middle wearing a black peaked cap, green top and a grimace on her face!

Selwyn reports that he, Kirsten, Tom and Sue gave the Emer Casey 10k run a go around Brockwell Park on Sunday.  Saying "Even though we were aided by an 11am start, plus an extra hour with the clocks going back, we were all haunted by Halloween hokey pokey hangovers.  It’s a tough 3.5 laps of the park and it really hurt but was for a good cause!".

League update

Cathy has updated the League results following the Jekyll and Hyde Duathlon last weekend. Cathy will finalise the League results before the Xmas party (so awards can be presented). Only swim/bike/run combination races with 5+ members racing between now and the beginning of December will count for 2011.

Cathy has received suggestions for improving the way the League operates for next year and would welcome any further ideas.

The aim is to get more members racing and to compete aginst their own gender/age group and also to increase our standing in the London region by including their league races (so far we've failed miserably at the latter with insufficient representation at a lot of league races).

Female senior: Suse Fairfax, Katie Crowe, Cathy Cooke
