Race report : National Elite Duathlon Championships

AlexReport by Alex Yee

This year the National Elite Youth Duathlon Championships were held at Prestworld Hall Circuit near Loughborough. I had travelled up the week before the race for a Triathlon England Youth and Junior Preparation Camp giving me the opportunity to train with other  talented  athletes. Unfortunately the weather during the camp was bad, it even snowed! However on Sunday the sun was out and the weather was wonderful for the race.

Alex on the start lineWe left for the race early at 07:45. At 09:30 we all lined up, we were briefed, given the opportunity to warm up and 15 minutes later our race began.

It was a very nerve racking experience waiting and watching all the other athletes that were competing, I tried to focus on what I had to do and run through how I wanted my race to go in my mind.

Just like every other race, the start was very quick and highly competitive with everyone jostling and pushing for a good position. Since I was one of the youngest and smaller athletes I was shoved to the back and had to run hard to make my way to the front.  Fortunately I was one of the first into transition and exited with five others to form the leading pack on the bike. On lap two we were joined by another two, but the race was still going to plan…. until the final lap!

Alex on the bike

I had just peeled off the lead so that I could recover as much as possible for the final run when the cyclist at the front attacked, unfortunately my concentration lapsed momentarily and I lost contact with the attacking group. Luckily for me two other athletes could not handle the pace either, so we worked together going into T2.

Alex on the runApproaching the dismount line my sock got stuck to the shoe Velcro and almost caused me to lose my balance but I managed to stay on and just about in control. I left transition in pursuit of the six leaders. The last run was short, only 1.25km so I was left with a big task. I managed to overtake one of the leaders and eventually finished in 6th place, just two seconds away from the 5th placed athlete.

Overall I am pleased with the result. The standard on the Elite Youth Race Circuit is very high and now I know what I need to do to succeed. The experience has given me more confidence for the next race.

I really enjoyed the camaraderie and the time devoted to training during the week long camp. It taught me how I can improve my performance with targeted training and exercises. I also enjoyed the opportunity to train with the British Triathlon Performance coaches alongside the elite athletes.
